Als Hannah Arendt (Barbara Sukowa) 1961 in Jerusalem den Gerichtssaal betritt, um für den renommierten The New Yorker über den Prozess gegen den Nazi-Verbrecher Adolf Eichmann zu berichten, erwartet sie, auf ein Monster zu treffen. Stattdessen erlebt sie einen Niemand. Die geistlose Mittelmäßigkeit Eichmanns passt nicht zum abgrundtief Bösen seiner Taten. Dieser Widerspruch beschäftigt Hannah Arendt sehr. Zurück in New York liest sie hunderte Prozessakten, recherchiert, diskutiert mit ihrem Mann Heinrich Blücher (Axel Milberg) und ihren Freunden. Ab Februar 1963 erscheint unter dem Titel "Eichmann in Jerusalem" ihre Artikelserie im The New Yorker. Mit ihrer These von der "Banalität des Bösen" schockiert Arendt die Welt. Die Reaktionen sind verheerend und niederschmetternd. Hannah Arendt wird geächtet, angefeindet, verliert lebenslange Freunde. Das Unverständnis einiger ihrer Freunde trifft sie hart, weniger die Hetzkampagnen, die zahlreiche Medien entfachen. Dennoch bleibt sie konsequent bei ihrer Haltung, sie kämpft und scheut keine Auseinandersetzung, wenn es um für sie so wichtige Themen wie Totalitarismus und Macht geht. Denn sie will verstehen. Auch wenn das bedeutet, "dahin zu denken, wo es weh tut".
